Mary Lou Retton is an American retired gymnast. 


She is best known for winning a gold medal in the individual all-around competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. 


She also won two silver medals and two bronze medals at the same Olympics.


Retton was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, on January 24, 1968. She began gymnastics at the age of four and began training with Bela Karolyi in 1983.


Retton was one of the favorites to win the individual all-around competition at the 1984 Olympics. She did not disappoint, winning the gold medal with a score of 79.195.


Retton retired from gymnastics after the 1984 Olympics. She has since worked as a television commentator and motivational speaker.
